Topic/Lesson Title

Addition and Subtraction

Rationale

This lesson continues student's knowledge of addition and subtraction while integrating authentic online learning. Explore the connection between addition and subtraction while solving problems using a range of strategies. The aim is to encourage students to be active learners by using online technologies to enable and support learning activities that continue outside of the classroom.

Learning Area Links As Per Curriculum/Syllabus And Appropriate Level Descriptions

 Australian National Curriculum-

  1. becoming fluent with partitioning numbers to understand the connection between addition and subtraction
  2. using counting on to identify the missing element in an addition problem (ACARA, 2010).

Addition and Subtraction – Solve simple addition and subtraction problems using a range of efficient mental and written strategies (ACMNA032) (Acara, 2010).

NSW Mathematics Syllabus

Students will use a range of different strategies and informal recording methods for addition and subtraction involving one and two digit numbers. (NSW DET Syllubus, 2009) .

-       Students have a basic knowledge of computers

Objectives

On completion of the lesson students will:

-       Understand the effects of adding and subtracting whole numbers

-       Complete two digit number problems

-       Have a better understanding of trading and regrouping

Resources/ Preparation

-       A computer and headphones for each student

-       Working out paper and pencil

-       whiteboard

Introduction (five minutes)

Review addition and subtraction method.

Teacher can revise math problems with a few examples and discuss the difference between the two signs on the whiteboard. An example can be given linking the two operations.

example 15+5=20 and 20-5=15

A short discussion/question and answer time. Students move to a computer each.

Main Body of the Lesson (thirty five minutes)

Explain to students they will be using the Maths is Fun website for today’s interactive lesson on addition and subtraction, using the IXL  Learning Math website. Instruct the students to click on the student activity tab. Instruct students to raise their hand if they require help. Explain as the students finish one area, there are extra activities and a games tab for further interactive learning.

Students can start with the first IXL Learning link. As the students finish the problems, they can click on the next IXL link, continually solving addition and subtraction problems.

Students with extra time can explore the games page.

Continuously observe students and assist students who are having problems. Prompt children to watch the youtube clips under the videos tab. Students can be directed to try the extra activities

Formative Assessment

Over the shoulder assessment, taking notes and assisting students who need help. Offer help to individuals and to the whole class. Direct students to different areas of the website.

Conclusion (five minutes)

Debrief the students at the end of the lesson.

Ask questions:

What did you learn today?

How did you find the online math questions?

Did you have any problems during the lesson?

Did you enjoy the lesson?

Does anyone have anything they would like to add?

Extension and Modifications for Particular Students

Extended expectations- some students will have more advanced reading and math skills and may finish early. These students can be directed to the extra activities area. Encourage scaffolding from peers for those that need it.

Follow up Lessons

The next lesson can review previous work and also examine more difficult addition and subtracting problems involving three digit numbers.

Review and Reflect

-       Was the interactive lesson engaging to students?

-       Was there enough time for students to complete the lesson?

-       Did the students enjoy the lesson?

-       Are there changes required to improve the concept of operation?

-       Did the students find the lesson informative?

-       Were students provided with enough information?
